October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Smell Good + Do Good

Breast cancer affects almost every one of us in some way. The statistics are sobering: About one in eight women in the US will develop breast cancer at some point in her life – and one in 39 women will die from breast cancer.

For me, this disease hits close to home. My mother, sister, and best friend have all battled breast cancer. They are all so courageous. I admired their strength and determination as they each fought this disease. Through all of it, they inspired me to be a better daughter, sister, and friend ... and a better person in general. They have taught me that kindness and generosity matter most in life.

Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many of us do something to spread awareness and provide support as we celebrate the survivors and help find a cure. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have other things on our minds. At the same time, it is important to remember that an estimated 42,000 women will succumb to breast cancer in the 2020. While our current options may be limited because of social distancing and quarantining, there are still many things we can do this month to spread hope and advance a cure.

Starling has proudly partnered with the Breast Cancer Alliance, which is based nearby in Greenwich, CT. We're so impressed with what this group is doing – making a national impact through significant investments in early stage research, breast surgery fellowship, and awareness, and also eliminating barriers of access to care for underserved and uninsured women. We especially love B.C.A. for its Junior Committee, a group of teens who educate and raise breast cancer awareness among other teens.

This year, Starling is a gold sponsor for the Breast Cancer Alliance’s second Get Fit for Hope Challenge.

A nationwide event dedicated to fitness, the Get Fit for Hope Challenge encourages participants to do something good for themselves (in the safety of their own home) while making an important impact on the healthcare of others. All proceeds from the Challenge will be donated to B.C.A. grants for 2021. We encourage all of you and your kids to participate in the Challenge this year and help the B.C.A. in its quest to combat breast cancer. Enter Now!
