It's Every Kid Healthy™ Week

It's Every Kid Healthy Week.

Now is the time to take action with the kids in your life and help them get involved in building a solid foundation of healthy habits. Every year this is a school event but given this year's circumstances of isolating, it's up to parents. We think it is a great tool for parents to engage kids in healthy choices and learning – complete with a schedule (something we all need these days). Every day has a specific activity or challenge to focus on.

Tasty Tuesday: Talk about great food choices with your kids. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains (skip the wheat if you're a celiac) and organic whenever possible. Every day.

Today it's great to find an easy and healthy recipe that everyone can take a hand in and help create.Everyone likes tacos right? Made with turkey, they are healthy and easy to make. Here's a delicious Turkey Taco recipe the Starling team (and the kiddos) all love:

Ground Turkey Tacos

Servings 4 servings
Calories 237 per serving

Taco seasoning:
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
3/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (OPTIONAL)
salt

For the tacos:
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 medium onion finely chopped
3 cloves garlic minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 pound ground turkey (Tip: dark meat is more flavorful, white meat is more lean)
1 14 oz can tomato sauce
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon brown sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Corn tortillas

Make the taco seasoning: In a small bowl, whisk together chlii powder, cumin, paprika, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt to taste.

Make the tacos: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil until shimmering. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add in taco seasoning, garlic, and oregano. Sautee until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Add ground turkey and cook, stirring occasionally, until almost cooked through but still slightly pink - about 3 minutes.

Stir in tomato sauce, stir in and cook for a minute. Then add in vinegar, and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 4 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Divide filling evenly among tortillas and serve with healthy garnishes such as shredded lettuce, diced tomato and avocado, scallions, and cilantro leaves. Yum!

Earth Day Wellness Wednesday

Focusing on environmental wellness, review the principles of following good practices in the home. Discuss ways to limit personal footprints:

  • Recycle and reuse – talk about the personal responsibility we all have to consciously reuse bags, skip the water bottle and plastic anything! A single plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose.
  • Personal conservation of resources such as energy and water – discuss why it is important that we all conserve. Take shorter showers, turn off the lights when you're not in a room, walk when you can and leave the car at home, etc..
  • Respect Nature – a perfect time to discuss planting a small garden or spend time outside on a hike observing wildlife and nature.

    Thoughtful Thursday

Now more than ever is a good time to practice gratitude and giving back with your kids. Work with them to find small ways to appreciate the people in their lives, whether it's a small note to a grandparent, or a video call to their best friend letting  their friend know why they're important to them.

It's also a great time, if you have the resources, to make a donation to a food shelter, pet shelter or organization that supports our nurses and doctors. Talk over the choice with everyone and make it official. Your kids will beam with pride. And so will you.

    Fitness Friday

Try something with everyone in tow. A dance party, a virtual kid yoga class or soccer with the whole family, are just a few ideas to keep everyone engaged and have fun.

It's a great time to reinforce with kids the many gains made with regular physical activity: better sleep, lowered heart rate, staying in shape and focused mind. Plant those seeds now, and it will stay with them for a lifetime.

Other great choices for kids? Teaching pride in appearance and good hygiene rank high. Helps build a healthy self-esteem. Start your kids on personal care products that are fun, safe and easy to use. We have several products made safe just for kids:

As always, we are common allergen-free, toxin-free, aluminum-free and 100% plant based. Made with love, for the ones you love.
